Right away I want to make it clear that this is not a review of the video game “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.” This is a review of the fan made animated prequel of the game entitled “Terrible Fate.”

The story of Terrible Fate begins with the Happy Mask Salesman talking of the night that Skull Kid took Majora’s Mask from him. The short film than shows the Imp alone, crying in the rain; that is until Tael and Tatl the fairy sisters come to him. It goes over their friendship as they played on his flute, and was happy to have friends for the first time in his life. That is when we learn that even Skull Kid met with a “terrible fate” and that he didn’t steal the mask, but rather the mask consumed him, turning him into the antagonist we know too well from the game. But this story is simply a amplification to the truth we already know. Skull Kid isn’t evil, He’s just as much a victim as the people of Termina. It’s a short film; being only 5 minutes in length. Now that I’ve told you about the plot of the story Here’s the pros and cons of the fan made prequel to my favorite Zelda Title: “Terrible Fate”

Pros: So much from so little.

I’m may not be a graphics guy with video games, but that doesn’t mean I don’t notice how beautiful things can be. This is a animated short film but it’s so beautiful, it almost looks like a production by Square Enix. Some of the scenes are so beautiful, they feel real which is great for a feature like this. The Story is so beautifully told in such a short time, and it plays as a true precursor to the game that if you’ve never played the game or ever looked into playing it again, I’d like to encourage you to give this video a watch before hand to keep in mind that the foe you face is also a victim to the Mask; it really makes you think about your actions in the game and makes the epic conclusion even more… well epic. It’s one of the best things that happened in 2016 and you all need to give it a watch!

Cons: What little there is.

Part of me wants to see this become a full movie and tell the full story of Majora’s Mask in whole, but unfortunately, that would get the Nintendo Ban Hammer swung so fast. And that’s my biggest complaint about this short film as a whole. Nintendo’s inability to allow cool things to happen to them. Could you imagine how many copies of Majora’s Mask 3D would have been sold if Nintendo haddn’t been a huge dick trying to take down this creation of love for the fandom they created. It’s the biggest gripe I’ve always had with the company that creates some of my favorite games like the Zelda Franchise, and Super Mario, among many others. I just wish they would be nicer to their fans.

This is a film every Zelda fan should Check out! It’s beautiful, it’s a true prequel to what i’d consider an underrated title in the franchise, and it tells a great story. It’s worth your time and you can find it on YouTube HERE
